Director of Engineering
Company  : Significant International Supplier of Key Materials to Various Industries
Location   : Midwest U.S.
High Visibility & Key Member of Corporate Engineering Leadership Team

Overview:

As a key part of the corporate engineering leadership team, this role will exercise considerable management responsibility and maintain very high corporate visibility in a highly successful company.  Functioning with a high degree of autonomy, the incumbent will report directly to the Vice President of Engineering while leading the Engineering Team which includes over 25 people in multiple locations.  The reach of this team is significant, including process and project engineering, technical support of maintenance and equipment reliability, and achievement of Operational Excellence goals.    

Due to the high level of responsibility of this role, it is crucial that interested candidates have 10 + years experience in engineering/project management leadership in a process plant based environment.  The Director must be self-sufficient, have a hands-on approach, and know how to lead, manage, and motivate a technical staff of engineers.  The Director must lead with a high level of energy and understand how to increase productivity and plant efficiency while maintaining a strong safety program.  It is strongly preferred that interested candidates hold the credential of being a Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.).

Additional Responsibilities and Requirements:

Leads the Process Plant Engineering Team

•    Interacts daily with site managers, contractors and plant personnel.
•    Maintains compliance with environmental health and safety policy in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
•    Works with business teams, plant leaders, and engineering function leader to set priorities and provide/acquire resources to meet agreed plans.
•    Develop, manage and mentor Process Plant Engineering Department staff (presently consisting of 23 process, project & reliability engineers and 8 technicians).
•    Develops and maintains sound project management processes including standards for bid processes and interaction with sourcing functions.
•    Leads the engineering support of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
•    Leads Engineering development via the Engineering Ladder.
•    Leads multiple capital projects ensuring that critical path and budget goals are met.
 
Project Engineering

•    Prepares and submits annual capital budgets.
•    Owner of the Process Plant Capital program, with overall responsibility for spending and forecasting a budget of $40 – $60 million annually. 
•    Ensures capital budgeting supports the objectives of the short and long term (five year) facility plan.
•    Prepares and submits capital appropriation requests, including well developed costs, schedule, operational and financial analysis.
•    Develops and manages capital project engineering and construction contracts.
•    Implements construction/installation strategies that coordinate with facility production plan.
 
Process Engineering and Productivity

•    Identify the key production processes which generate the highest levels of expense or impede the production process and devise appropriate solutions.
•    In conjunction with the Operations group, establish operating efficiency targets and suitable metrics for key components of the production process.
•    Identify, through research and experimentation, opportunities to reduce costs or increase productivity within the existing structure.
•    Work with Operations to develop engineering solutions for production bottlenecks and problems.
•    Support process engineering projects to improve production rate, energy efficiency, and plant reliability.
•    Provides engineering resources to support productivity measurements and methods to achieve productivity improvements and Operational Excellence Goals.
•    Leverage recent investments to increase sustainable production rates by implementing engineering solutions to improve process effectiveness.
 
 Engineering and Risk Management

•    Look to enhance the safety of the operation and ensure compliance with all statutory requirements.
•    Ensure site integrity is maintained through design and monitoring.
 
Maintenance and Reliability

•    Reliability Engineering through Site Engineering leaders.
•    Respond to Operations and Maintenance Manager requests to implement process improvements.
•    Identifies opportunities to improve efficiencies/reliability in facility equipment.
•    Works closely with Maintenance Departments to support Reliable Asset

Management objectives

•    Works closely with Production and Maintenance to set standards for equipment purchases.
 
Sourcing

•    Works closely with sourcing to insure bidding, negotiation, and sourcing standards are achieved.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

•    An accredited degree in a related engineering discipline is required.
•    10 + years as an engineering/project management leader in a process plant based engineering field is required.
•    Registered Professional Engineer is a plus.
•    Experience with lean manufacturing/six sigma a plus.
 
Computer Skills: 
     
•    Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required. 
•    Proficiency with AutoCAD, MS Project or similar project management software.
•    CMMS systems knowledge is preferred.

Mill Maintenance & Engineering Manager

Process Engineering Manager

Process Engineering Manager

The Process Engineering Manager supervises the Process Engineering group and is responsible for tracking and documenting the processes of the plants. He/she monitors recovery at the plants and is responsible for working with plant operations to maintain budgeted recovery and guides his/her group to do the same. The Process Engineering Manager must develop a healthy relationship with the plant operations personnel and guide them in making process change decisions. He/she guides the process engineering group to assist superintendents in budgeting and forecasting exercises, ensures product quality and efficiency of processing processes at all surface operations, guides the Process Engineering group in developing capital project proposals, scopes and AFEs, tracks progress of capital projects and produces regular reports on status.

Responsibilities include:
  • Troubleshoot processing problems with particular emphasis on recovery;
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting;
  • Evaluate lab data;
  • Manage process information for major projects;
  • Develop scopes, AFEs and track progress of projects;
  • Propose improvement modifications to existing equipment and processes;
  • Develop new procedures and equipment to solve process issues if needed;
  • Train Process personnel;
  • Determine if work areas are safe;
  • Observe and enforce all safety and company rules; and
  • Travel as required. 
Requirements include:
  • BS in Mineral Process Engineering/Metallurgical Engineering/Chemical Engineering or equivalent;

  • Strong understanding of Mine Planning, Mine Scheduling, Mine Geology/Geotechnical and Mine Production with ability to evaluate ore grade/quality, cut-off grade, blending, slope stability, mine capacity, and production strategies;
  • Understanding of mining software such as Surpac, MineSite, Gemcom, Vulcan or equivalent;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint; and
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills; excellent organizational skills.
